Kazan International Airport (KZN) is the principal aviation gateway to the Republic of Tatarstan and one of the busiest airports in the Volga Federal District of Russia, routinely handling more than 4 million passengers a year. Serving Kazan — a UNESCO-listed city of 1.3 million and host to the 2013 Summer Universiade, the 2015 FINA World Championships and matches of the 2018 FIFA World Cup — KZN combines strong domestic trunk connectivity with a steady program of international services to Turkey, the Gulf and Central Asia. It is operated by JSC Kazan International Airport. KZN sits 26 km (16 mi) southeast of central Kazan at an elevation of 411 ft (125 m), on the flat steppe of the Volga valley. A single concrete runway, 11/29, measuring 12,303 ft (3,750 m) and unusually wide at 197 ft (60 m), handles all widebody operations. The combined Terminal 1A opened in time for the 2013 Universiade and was later expanded with Terminal 1B; together the two processors cover roughly 65,000 m² and are designed for about 6 million passengers per year, with further enlargement tied to plans for additional direct international routes. Thirty-one airlines link KZN to 76 nonstop destinations. Aeroflot-affiliated Rossiya, Ural Airlines, S7, NordStar, Red Wings and Tatarstan-based carriers anchor the domestic network to Moscow (both Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo), St Petersburg, Sochi, Yekaterinburg and the Black Sea resorts, while Turkish Airlines, FlyDubai, Air Arabia and Uzbekistan Airways lead the international side, serving Istanbul, Antalya, Dubai, Tashkent and Baku. KZN's role as the aviation hub of a Tatar-majority cultural and economic region of 4 million inhabitants gives it strategic weight well beyond its passenger count (2025).

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Kazan

Public transportation

A covered walkway connects Terminal 1A to the Aeroexpress commuter rail station, where direct trains to Kazan-Passazhirskaya main railway station run several times a day in about 25 minutes for roughly 40 RUB. Public bus 197 provides a cheaper, more frequent service to Prospekt Pobedy metro station (Kazan Metro's only line), with payment by contactless card or Transport Card at around 36 RUB. The bus stop sits directly in front of the arrivals forecourt.

Taxis & rideshare

Official taxi desks in the Terminal 1A arrivals hall book fixed-price rides to central Kazan, typically 700 to 1,000 RUB. Yandex.Go is the dominant ride-hailing app and collects from a marked zone in the short-term car park, almost always at a lower price than kerbside. Maxim and inDrive are also active. Unsolicited offers from drivers inside the terminal are best declined in favor of app-based or marked counter options.

Rental cars

Desks for Europcar, Rentmotors and several regional Russian operators sit in the Terminal 1A arrivals hall, with vehicles pre-positioned in the adjacent car park. A home-country licence plus International Driving Permit and a credit card for the security deposit are required. Winter tyres are mandatory between November and April, and advance online booking generally yields noticeably lower daily rates than walk-up pricing.
