Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU) is Slovenia's main international airport and the primary aviation gateway to the country. Located in Zgornji Brnik, 26 km (16 mi) north of central Ljubljana at 1,273 ft (388 m) elevation on the Gorenjska plain, the airport is ringed by the foothills of the Julian and Kamnik-Savinja Alps. A single 10,827-ft (3,300-m) asphalt runway 12/30 is long enough to handle widebody charters and served as a key transatlantic diversion alternate during Adria Airways' Boeing 777 operations. LJU serves 46 routes to 35 destinations on 38 airlines (2026) - an exceptionally high airline count against route count that reflects the airport's dramatic recovery from the 2019 collapse of former flag carrier Adria Airways. The vacuum has been filled by a broad mix of operators: Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, Air France, Swiss, LOT Polish Airlines, Air Serbia, British Airways, easyJet, Wizz Air, Ryanair, Transavia, Finnair and seasonal leisure carriers such as Sun d'Amor, Marabu and Neos. The airport is operated by Fraport Slovenija, a subsidiary of Germany's Fraport AG, which acquired a 75% stake in 2014. The airport was renamed in 2007 after Slovenian politician and anti-communist dissident Jože Pučnik (1932-2003), reflecting the country's post-independence identity. A modernised passenger terminal opened in July 2021 at a cost of 25 million EUR, doubling peak-hour capacity and adding a new security hall and baggage system. LJU is also Slovenia's primary air-cargo facility, handling DHL and other express operators serving the Adriatic-Pannonian economic corridor. Pre-pandemic traffic peaked near 1.7 million passengers and is gradually returning to those levels despite the loss of Adria, which previously connected Ljubljana to some 30 European cities. Slovenia's EU, Eurozone and Schengen membership simplifies border handling, and the airport's compact size makes minimum connection times of 30 minutes feasible - an operational advantage for leisure travellers onward-connecting to Jadran coast destinations.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Zgornji Brnik

Public transportation

Public bus line 28 operates between the terminal and Ljubljana's central bus station next to the main railway station on a roughly hourly weekday schedule, with reduced weekend frequency. Tickets cost around 4 EUR from the driver; journey time is 45-50 minutes with multiple stops. Check the latest timetable as service can be thin outside peak hours.

Taxis & rideshare

Taxis queue at the rank directly outside the terminal. Journey to central Ljubljana takes 20-30 minutes and typically costs 35-50 EUR; always confirm price before departure. Shared-shuttle services GoOpti and Nomago offer pre-booked fixed-rate transfers from roughly 10 EUR per person to Ljubljana - the most popular option for knowledgeable travellers.

Rental cars

Sixt, Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Budget, Alamo, Enterprise and Global Rent a Car operate desks in the main arrivals hall, with vehicles collected from the adjacent lot. Slovenia's autobahn network requires a vinjeta electronic road-use sticker, typically included in rental pricing. An EU or international driving permit is accepted; winter tyres are mandatory from 15 November to 15 March.
