M. R. Štefánik Airport — commonly known as Bratislava Airport — is the largest and busiest airport in Slovakia, located 6 mi (9 km) northeast of central Bratislava. Named after Milan Rastislav Štefánik, the Slovak astronomer, diplomat, and general who co-founded Czechoslovakia, BTS handles 129 routes to 84 destinations operated by 20 airlines. The airport's strategic position is unusual and significant: Bratislava sits only 40 mi (65 km) from Vienna, and BTS operates in direct and intense competition with Vienna International Airport (VIE) for both Slovak and broader Central European originating traffic. BTS's traditional role has been as a low-cost-carrier alternative to the more expensive full-service VIE, serving the twin-city Vienna–Bratislava metropolitan region of roughly 3 million residents. Ryanair is by a wide margin the dominant carrier at BTS and operates a base at the airport, anchoring the low-cost network. Wizz Air also serves BTS with a growing footprint. Additional carriers include Pegasus Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Smartwings, Air Cairo, Nouvelair, Tunisair, Corendon Airlines, and seasonal TUI and Enter Air charter operations. The route network concentrates on UK (London Stansted, Luton, Manchester, Edinburgh), Mediterranean leisure destinations (Palma, Malaga, Alicante, Tenerife, Faro, Antalya, Bodrum, Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh, Tunis, Monastir), Italian cities (Rome, Milan, Naples, Catania), and Istanbul as the principal long-haul one-stop connection. The airfield sits at 436 ft (133 m) elevation with two concrete runways: 13/31 at 10,466 ft (3,190 m) and 04/22 at 9,515 ft (2,900 m). The single passenger terminal, expanded and modernized in 2010 with new A and B piers, handles all scheduled and charter traffic under one roof. BTS's catchment is heavily cross-border — a significant share of Austrian, Hungarian, and southern Moravian residents use BTS for price-sensitive European destinations — and direct coach links to Vienna city center and Vienna airport reinforce the twin-city aviation market.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Bratislava

Public transportation

Bratislava Public Transport (DPB) bus line 61 connects the airport to Bratislava's main railway station (Hlavná stanica) in 20–30 min during the day; the night bus N61 covers late arrivals. Tickets must be purchased in advance from kiosks or vending machines at the stop and validated on board. Slovak Lines and FlixBus operate international coach service directly from the BTS forecourt, most notably multiple daily departures to Vienna (Erdberg station, 75–90 min) and Vienna Airport (VIE, 60 min), Prague, Brno, and Budapest — a distinctive cross-border coach network that few European airports of BTS's size offer.

Taxis & rideshare

Licensed taxi stands sit directly outside arrivals with 24/7 service. Bolt and Uber operate widely in Bratislava with designated airport pickup zones and are typically 20–40% cheaper than street-flagged taxis. Typical fares: EUR 15–22 to central Bratislava (15–20 min), EUR 25–40 to the Petržalka and Dúbravka districts, EUR 70–110 to Vienna city center (60–75 min), EUR 90–130 to Vienna International Airport. Cross-border taxi transfers to Vienna are commonly offered at fixed rates and are a standard connection for BTS users accessing VIE long-haul flights.

Rental cars

All major international brands (Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, Sixt) plus Slovak operators operate counters in the arrivals hall. Advance booking is strongly recommended. Slovakia requires a motorway vignette (e-dialničná známka) for driving on highways, which rental companies typically include by default; for onward travel to Austria, Hungary, or Czech Republic separate vignettes may be required and can usually be added at the rental desk. Car rental from BTS is a popular option for Vienna-area business travelers looking to avoid Austrian rental rates.
