Zagreb Franjo Tuđman International Airport is the largest and busiest airport in Croatia, serving the capital Zagreb's roughly 770,000 residents and a catchment extending across continental Croatia and into parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, and Hungary. Located 7.5 mi (12 km) southeast of downtown Zagreb at 353 ft (108 m) elevation in the town of Velika Gorica, ZAG handles 87 routes across 65 destinations through 24 airlines. The airport is named for Franjo Tuđman, Croatia's first post-independence president who led the country through the 1991–1995 War of Independence. Despite Zagreb being Croatia's largest city and political capital, ZAG ranks only second or third among Croatian airports in peak summer passenger volume due to the heavy tourism orientation of coastal airports Split (SPU) and Dubrovnik (DBV). Croatia Airlines, the Croatian flag carrier, operates ZAG as its sole hub with a fleet of Airbus and DHC-8 aircraft serving major European hubs and Croatian coastal destinations. Lufthansa Group is heavily present with Lufthansa (Frankfurt, Munich), Austrian (Vienna), SWISS (Zürich), and Brussels Airlines, and Air France-KLM serves with Air France (Paris–CDG) and KLM (Amsterdam). Additional scheduled service includes Turkish Airlines (Istanbul), Emirates (Dubai, with widebody 777 service that marks ZAG's principal intercontinental connection), Qatar Airways (Doha), LOT (Warsaw), Finnair (Helsinki), British Airways (London–Heathrow), SAS, Air Serbia, Air Transat (seasonal Toronto), Iberia, ITA Airways, Korean Air (seasonal), Ryanair, Wizz Air, easyJet, and Vueling. ZAG handles significant transit traffic connecting the Western Balkans to the EU rail-air grid. The airfield operates a single asphalt runway — 04/22 at 10,669 ft (3,252 m) — capable of full widebody operations. The striking new passenger terminal opened in 2017, designed by Branko Kincl, Velimir Neidhardt, and Jure Radić with a distinctive curving roof structure inspired by Croatian traditional architecture. The new terminal replaced the 1980s T1 building (now used for cargo and administrative functions), doubling capacity to 5M passengers annually and adding full jet-bridge access, modern Schengen/non-Schengen segregation, and expanded retail. ZAG is operated by the Međunarodna Zračna Luka Zagreb (MZLZ) concessionaire consortium led by French construction group Bouygues, which holds a 30-year concession starting in 2013.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Velika Gorica

Public transportation

The main public transport option is the dedicated airport shuttle bus operated by Pleso Prijevoz, providing direct service between ZAG and the Zagreb Main Bus Station (Autobusni Kolodvor) adjacent to the railway station. Buses run frequently (every 30 min during daytime) with journey time of 35–45 min and fares of EUR 8 single. A cheaper but slower alternative is the local ZET public bus line 290, which connects the airport to Kvaternikov Trg via Velika Gorica with fares of EUR 1–1.50 and journey time of 45–60 min. From the Main Bus Station, onward connections serve all Croatian cities, the coast, and international destinations.

Taxis & rideshare

The official taxi stand is located directly outside the arrivals hall of the passenger terminal with 24/7 service. Typical fares run EUR 30–40 (HRK is no longer in use following Croatia's 2023 euro adoption) to central Zagreb (30–40 min depending on traffic), EUR 20–30 to Velika Gorica and southern suburbs, and EUR 45–70 to outlying districts including Samobor and Zaprešić. Uber and Bolt both operate at ZAG with designated pickup areas and typically offer 15–25% savings compared to rank taxis.

Rental cars

Car rental service desks are conveniently located on the ground floor of the passenger terminal in the arrivals hall. A wide range of international and Croatian companies are represented, including Sixt, Hertz, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, and local Croatian firms Oryx, Nova Rent a Car, and Uni Rent. Pre-booking online is strongly recommended for better rates, particularly during summer tourism peak when demand is high. A valid EU or internationally recognized driver license and credit card are required. Highway A3 provides fast onward access eastbound to Slavonski Brod and the Serbian border, westbound to Ljubljana and the Italian border, and via A1 southbound to Split and the Croatian coast.
