Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport (SZX) serves one of the densest industrial economies on earth and consistently ranks in the global top thirty airports by passenger throughput. Sited at just 13 ft (4 m) elevation on reclaimed land along the eastern bank of the Pearl River estuary, it lies 32 km (20 mi) northwest of Futian CBD and forms one corner of the Greater Bay Area triangle with HKG and CAN. The airport handled 52.8M passengers in 2024, restoring its position as mainland China's fifth-busiest and its fastest-growing first-tier hub since the reopening of cross-border movement. Terminal 3, the Massimiliano Fuksas-designed honeycomb-roofed structure opened in 2013, remains an architectural icon of Chinese aviation: 500,000 sq m of floor plate under an articulated double-skin steel-and-perforated-metal roof that filters daylight into all four concourse fingers. A satellite concourse opened in December 2021 adding 38 additional boarding gates, and construction on Terminal 4 and a third runway is under way for a 2025–2026 opening, designed to lift capacity to 80M annual passengers. Shenzhen Airlines, a Star Alliance member under Air China ownership, is the largest home carrier, with China Southern, Donghai, and Hainan Airlines maintaining substantial operations. SZX's geographic situation inside the Greater Bay Area gives it an unusual competitive dynamic: three large international airports operate within a 60 km radius, and a dedicated ferry terminal at the airport provides direct high-speed sea links to Hong Kong Airport, Hong Kong SkyPier, Zhuhai, and Macau — the only mainland Chinese airport with its own seaport. The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge, opened in 2024, has further compressed drive times to western Guangdong.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Shenzhen (Bao'an)

Public transportation

Shenzhen Metro Line 11 (Airport Express) and Line 1 both serve the airport, with Line 11 offering a 30-minute, CNY 10 express run to Futian and a continuation to Gangxia North for Hong Kong West Kowloon transfer. Airport shuttle coaches serve 15 routes across the Pearl River Delta including Dongguan, Huizhou, and Zhongshan, with cross-boundary coaches to Hong Kong (HKIA and urban stops) and Macau departing every 30 minutes from the Ground Transportation Centre.

Taxis & rideshare

Taxis queue at the arrivals level of Terminal 3 under dispatched supervision, operating on meter at CNY 10 flagfall plus CNY 2.80 per km. Typical fare to Futian is CNY 100–130 (35 minutes via the Guangshen Coastal Expressway) and to Luohu CNY 130–160. Didi Chuxing is the dominant ride-hail service and collects from the P4 parking level via designated numbered bays.

Rental cars

Self-drive rental is limited to Chinese licence holders; eHi, CAR Inc, and Shouqi operate counters in the T3 arrivals hall. Chauffeured private-car rental, booked via Didi's premium tier or hotel concierge, is the default product for international visitors. Vehicles are delivered to the designated P3 pick-up zone, with the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge and Guangshen Expressway reachable within five minutes of exit.
