Pune Airport, officially Lohegaon Airport, is the principal airport of Pune and the third-busiest airport in the Indian state of Maharashtra after Mumbai and Nagpur, handling roughly 9.5 million passengers annually. Pune — a city of 7 million and one of India's principal automotive, IT services, and higher-education centers — sits only 150 km (93 mi) southeast of Mumbai but is served by a separate airport because of the difficult terrain of the Western Ghats between the two cities. PNQ is one of the most constrained major Indian airports: the airfield is shared with the Indian Air Force's Lohegaon base, home to a Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter squadron, and civil operations are only permitted in slots that do not conflict with military training and readiness operations. PNQ is served by IndiGo, Air India, Vistara (absorbed into Air India in 2024–25), SpiceJet, Akasa, and Alliance Air, with domestic service to Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Goa, and Mumbai as the main trunk routes. International service is limited relative to Pune's economic weight due to military slot constraints and terminal capacity: Air India serves Frankfurt and Dubai, Lufthansa serves Frankfurt seasonally, and various Gulf carriers (Emirates, Etihad, Qatar, Oman Air, Fly Dubai, Air Arabia) operate to Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and Muscat. Singapore Airlines and Thai AirAsia have operated to Singapore and Bangkok respectively. A single runway, 10/28, measures 8,320 ft (2,535 m). An expanded civil terminal opened in 2022–23 to relieve severe congestion. PNQ sits 10 km (6 mi) northeast of Pune city center at an elevation of 1,942 ft (592 m) on the Deccan Plateau. A new greenfield Pune International Airport at Purandar is under development to ultimately replace PNQ's civil operations and remove the military-slot constraint, though it has been subject to extended delays.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Pune

Public transportation

PMPML (Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal) city bus route AS1 (Airport Shuttle) operates between PNQ and Pune railway station via Hadapsar and Shivajinagar for INR 50–80, with 45–60 minute frequencies. No metro rail currently serves the airport; Pune Metro Line 1 (Purple Line) runs to Shivajinagar with a planned future extension to PNQ.

Taxis & rideshare

Prepaid taxi counters inside arrivals issue fixed-fare coupons; typical fares run INR 350–500 to Pune central areas (Koregaon Park, Kalyani Nagar, Shivajinagar) for a 20–40 minute trip depending on traffic on Airport Road and Nagar Road, which can be severe. Ola and Uber both operate at PNQ from a designated pickup area and typically undercut prepaid taxi rates; Uber Premier and Ola Prime offer air-conditioned sedans at moderate prices.

Rental cars

Self-drive car rental at Indian airports remains a niche market; Zoomcar, Myles, and Revv operate at PNQ, and international brands Avis and Hertz have limited presence. Chauffeur-driven car services through hotels, tour operators, and Ola Rentals/Uber Rentals are far more common. From the airport, Airport Road connects to Nagar Road and onward to Koregaon Park (10 km / 6 mi) and central Pune (12 km / 7.5 mi); the Pune–Mumbai Expressway is accessed via the Pune ring road. India drives on the left.
