Francisco Bangoy International is the principal aviation gateway to Mindanao and the Philippines' third-busiest airport outside Metro Manila, handling roughly 4.5M passengers annually. The 3,000 m (9,842 ft) asphalt runway at 29 m (96 ft) elevation, 12 km northeast of central Davao in Sasa, accommodates full narrowbody operations and has occasionally hosted widebody charter and repatriation flights — the combination of throughput, runway length, and role as the southern island group's primary international entry point secures its place in the global top 534. Route structure reflects its hub role for Mindanao: about 9 airlines operate 26 routes to 17 destinations (2026). Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and PAL Express run the dominant domestic trunks to Manila (45 movements daily at peak), Cebu, Iloilo, Bacolod, Cagayan de Oro, Zamboanga, General Santos, Butuan, and Tagbilaran. International service covers Singapore (Scoot, Cebu Pacific), Hong Kong, and seasonal service to Doha — a modest network that nonetheless makes DVO the only international airport serving a Mindanao population of roughly 27 million. The current terminal opened in 2003 with a nameplate capacity of 2M passengers — now roughly double-subscribed during peaks — and a replacement facility with a new parallel taxiway is under phased construction. DVO serves as the Philippine Air Force's 3rd Air Division base, handles a substantial share of southern-Philippines fresh-produce cargo (particularly Cavendish bananas bound for Japan and Korea), and is the designated widebody alternate for Cebu-Mactan on cross-equatorial long-haul routes.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Davao

Public transportation

There is no direct city bus or rail service from the terminal. Jeepneys and multicabs operate from the Daang Maharlika Highway (Airport Road), a short walk from the terminal entrance. Routes serve downtown Davao, the Sasa pier, and Toril. These are the most economical options but can be crowded with luggage.

Taxis & rideshare

Yellow metered taxis and white fixed-fare coupon taxis queue at the designated taxi bay outside arrivals. Fares to downtown run roughly ₱250–400 (12 km / 7 mi, 20–40 minutes). Grab ride-hailing also operates from a designated pickup zone.

Rental cars

Avis, Hertz, and local firms such as Diamond and Tipid Rent-a-Car maintain counters or representatives in arrivals. Advance booking is advised during peak travel periods and summer. Self-drive is common for visitors heading to Samal Island or the Mount Apo foothills.
