Jinnah International is Pakistan's largest airport by movements and historically the country's flagship international gateway, serving Karachi — the nation's financial capital, largest city (metropolitan population exceeding 20M), and principal seaport. Named for Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Pakistan's founding father and Karachi's native son, the airport was once the busiest in South Asia and a strategic refueling hub on British, Pan Am, TWA, BOAC, and Lufthansa kangaroo routes between Europe, the Gulf, and Australia. That role eroded as longer-range aircraft eliminated the need for intermediate stops, but Karachi remains Pakistan's commercial aviation center. Two parallel runways — 3,400 m (11,155 ft) and 3,200 m (10,500 ft) — and a single large passenger terminal opened in 1994 support approximately 71 routes to 38 destinations across 31 airlines. Pakistan International maintains its primary operating base and heavy maintenance facility here. International capacity is dominated by Gulf labor-migration routes — Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Doha, Muscat, Jeddah, Riyadh, Dammam, and Bahrain operate at high frequency via Emirates, Etihad, Qatar, Saudia, Oman Air, FlyDubai, Air Arabia, Kuwait Airways, and SalamAir — alongside long-haul services to the UK, North America (historically), China, Thailand, and Malaysia. Jinnah International hosts one of the largest private freight operations in South Asia through various integrators and is also significant for aircraft maintenance; PIA Engineering is among the few South Asian organizations capable of C-check work on widebody aircraft. The airport experienced a high-profile 2014 terrorist attack that spurred major security rebuilds; physical access is now tightly controlled. Passenger traffic reached approximately 7M in 2023, well below historical peaks and constrained by PIA's fleet contraction and ongoing financial restructuring.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Karachi

Public transportation

Direct public transit at KHI is limited. Peoples Bus Service and other Sindh government bus routes operate along Shahrah-e-Faisal, the main artery alongside the airport, but no route terminates at the terminal — reaching a bus stop requires a substantial walk with luggage, which is not recommended. Most passengers use taxis or ride-hailing.

Taxis & rideshare

Pre-paid taxi counters just outside Arrivals offer fixed fares to Karachi's major districts — often the most reliable option for arriving passengers. Uber, Careem, and inDrive all operate 24/7 from designated pickup zones and typically undercut pre-paid taxis by 20–40%. A ride to Clifton or DHA (Defence Housing Authority) takes 25–40 minutes and costs 1,000–2,000 PKR via ride-hailing.

Rental cars

Avis and several Pakistani operators maintain desks in both international and domestic Arrivals halls. Chauffeur-driven rentals are the overwhelming norm for visitors given Karachi's traffic and security environment; daily rates with driver and fuel run 7,000–15,000 PKR. Self-drive rental requires an International Driving Permit alongside a valid national license but is uncommon.
