Taiwan Taoyuan International is Taiwan's principal international gateway and one of East Asia's most important transfer points, handling roughly 45M passengers (2024) and consistently ranking among the ten busiest airports worldwide for international cargo — a function of its position at the center of the Northeast Asia manufacturing corridor and its role as EVA Air's and China Airlines' primary hub. TPE sits 40 km (25 mi) west of central Taipei in Dayuan District, Taoyuan City, on a 1,223 ha (3,022 acre) site at 106 ft (32 m) elevation. China Airlines (SkyTeam) and EVA Air (Star Alliance) both headquarter their global networks at TPE, a rare configuration of two full-service hub carriers at a single airport belonging to opposing alliances. EVA Air is the larger operator by seats, famous for its Hello Kitty-branded jets and its Boeing 787/777 long-haul fleet; China Airlines operates the largest all-Airbus A350 long-haul fleet in Asia. Combined with Starlux Airlines (launched 2020, positioned as a luxury full-service carrier and rapidly adding A350-900 long-haul), TPE is unusual in hosting three premium full-service operators. The network reaches 104 destinations across 55 airlines, with dense links across Asia-Pacific, transpacific to all major North American gateways, and growing European service. Two parallel runways of 12,008 ft (3,660 m) and 10,991 ft (3,350 m) handle operations split across Terminal 1 (opened 1979, refurbished 2013) and Terminal 2 (opened 2000), linked by the Skytrain automated people mover. Terminal 3 — a massive 640,000 sqm (6.9M sqft) complex designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners with capacity for 45M additional passengers — is under construction for phased opening through 2027, and a third runway is planned to follow. TPE has repeatedly been named among the world's best airports in the Skytrax awards.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Taoyuan

Public transportation

Taoyuan Airport MRT runs Express trains (35 minutes, NT$160) and Commuter trains (50 minutes) from underground stations at both terminals to Taipei Main Station, every 15 minutes from 06:00 to 23:00. From Taipei Main Station, connections to Taiwan High-Speed Rail reach Kaohsiung in 90 minutes. Intercity coaches from multiple operators run 24/7 to Taipei, Taichung, Hsinchu, and other cities from the Ground Transportation Center.

Taxis & rideshare

Licensed taxis queue outside both terminal arrival halls, using a regulated meter plus a 15% airport surcharge. Fares to central Taipei run NT$1,000–1,400 in 40–55 minutes depending on traffic on National Highway 2. Cash and most credit cards are accepted; many drivers do not speak English, so a written destination address is useful.

Rental cars

Avis, Hertz, IWS, Chailease, and VIP Car Rental operate desks in both terminals' arrival halls. Vehicle pickup is from off-airport lots served by courtesy shuttle. Foreign drivers must carry an International Driving Permit plus their original national licence; Chinese-mainland licences are not accepted. Booking ahead is recommended for Lunar New Year and summer peaks.
