Guiyang Longdongbao International is the principal airport of Guizhou Province in southwestern China, handling roughly 19M passengers (2024) from a mountain-plateau site 11 km (7 mi) southeast of central Guiyang at 3,736 ft (1,139 m) elevation — one of the highest-altitude major airports in eastern China and a technically demanding site carved out of the karst topography that defines the province. KWE serves a catchment of roughly 40 million people across Guizhou and neighboring regions and is a rapidly growing secondary hub in China's western-development strategy. China Southern, China Eastern, Air China, Hainan Airlines, XiamenAir, Juneyao, and the Chinese low-cost operators all fly substantial schedules, with Colorful Guizhou Airlines — the province's home-based regional carrier — running its primary base here. International service is limited but growing, with routes to Bangkok, Singapore, Seoul-Incheon, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and seasonal Southeast Asian points. The route network reaches 95 destinations across 38 airlines, almost entirely domestic China-China flows tied to the province's tourism economy (Huangguoshu Waterfall, Libo, Zhaoxing Dong villages) and its role as a big-data industry cluster anchored by the national facilities of Apple, Tencent, and Huawei. Two parallel runways — 01R/19L at 13,123 ft (4,000 m) and 01L/19R at 10,499 ft (3,200 m) — handle traffic at Terminals 1, 2, and 3. The original Terminal 2 opened in 2012 with 180,000 sqm (1.9M sqft); a Terminal 3 expansion and second runway delivered in stages through 2021 lifted capacity toward 30M annual passengers. A Phase III expansion under construction through 2030 will add a third runway and a 450,000 sqm (4.8M sqft) satellite terminal targeting 50M capacity, consolidating KWE's status as one of the fastest-growing airports in western China.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Guiyang (Nanming)

Public transportation

Guiyang Metro Line 3 serves Longdongbao International Airport station directly at the terminal, providing a rapid-transit link to downtown Guiyang (Huaxi, Jinyang) for CNY 2–6, trains every 5–10 minutes. Dedicated airport shuttle bus lines connect to Guiyang Railway Station, Guiyang North Railway Station (for high-speed rail), and major commercial districts at CNY 20–25.

Taxis & rideshare

Metered taxis queue 24/7 at the official stands outside arrivals. Central Guiyang (Nanming District) runs CNY 60–80 in 20–30 minutes depending on traffic. Always use the dispatcher queue rather than freelance curbside offers. Didi Chuxing rideshare is widely used via app.

Rental cars

China Auto Rental (CAR Inc.) and eHi Car Services maintain counters in arrivals. Foreign drivers generally require a valid mainland-Chinese driving licence; International Driving Permits alone are not accepted under PRC law. Chauffeured-hire through the same operators is the standard route for overseas visitors.
