Navi Mumbai International Airport is India's newest major commercial airport and the long-awaited second gateway for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, opened in 2025 to relieve chronic capacity saturation at the single-runway Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International (BOM). Located roughly 22 mi (35 km) east of central Mumbai at Ulwe in Navi Mumbai, the airport is being developed by a joint venture led by Adani Airport Holdings with the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO). The full build-out targets 90 million annual passengers across four terminals and two parallel runways, a scale that will place NMI among the world's 20 busiest airports and materially expand India's domestic aviation capacity. As of early operations the airport handles 18 routes across 13 destinations through 3 airlines, a footprint that will expand rapidly as IndiGo, Air India, Akasa Air, and international carriers progressively transfer services from BOM. The terminal's signature architecture — a lotus-inspired roof designed by Zaha Hadid Architects — has been positioned as a national-prestige project and counterpart to BOM's Terminal 2. Navi Mumbai is expected to function as a dual-airport system with BOM, splitting domestic and international traffic across the two fields in a model comparable to London Heathrow/Gatwick or Seoul Incheon/Gimpo. The airfield features two parallel asphalt runways, both 12,139 ft (3,700 m) long, capable of handling the largest widebody aircraft including the Airbus A380 and Boeing 777-300ER. The field's 184 ft (56 m) elevation and coastal location on the eastern shore of Mumbai Harbour required extensive land reclamation, river diversion (the Ulwe River), and hill levelling during construction — one of the largest civil-engineering airport programs of the decade. NMI is positioned as a multi-modal hub integrating metro, suburban rail, and planned coastal waterway connections with the new Mumbai Trans Harbour Link expressway.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Navi Mumbai

Public transportation

NMI is designed as a multi-modal transit hub. Planned and phased connections include a dedicated airport station on Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1, a direct link to the Mumbai Suburban Railway network via the Targhar station, and bus services operated by NMMT, BEST, and MSRTC connecting to Navi Mumbai, central Mumbai, Thane, and Pune. The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL / Atal Setu) also provides a rapid road corridor between South Mumbai and the airport.

Taxis & rideshare

Dedicated pick-up and drop-off zones at the terminal accommodate pre-paid taxi counters and app-based ride-hailing services including Ola and Uber. Booking counters in the arrivals hall handle fixed-price metered transfers to Navi Mumbai townships, central Mumbai (around 60 to 90 min depending on route and traffic), and destinations across the MMR. Premium car services are also available on request.

Rental cars

Major Indian and international car rental brands operate service desks within the passenger terminal, offering both self-drive and chauffeur-driven options. Chauffeur-driven hire is the more common choice given Mumbai traffic conditions. Advance online booking is recommended, especially during peak holiday and business-travel periods.
