Tromsø Airport, Langnes is the largest airport in northern Norway and the main aerial gateway to the Norwegian Arctic — a role that has intensified as Tromsø has become one of Europe's top destinations for northern-lights tourism, Arctic expedition cruising, and polar-region scientific research. The city sits at 69° 40′ N, roughly 350 km north of the Arctic Circle, making TOS one of the world's northernmost airports with scheduled widebody-capable infrastructure and regular international service. A single 2,450 m (8,041 ft) asphalt runway on Tromsøya Island, just 5 km from the city center, supports approximately 71 routes to 43 destinations via 20 airlines. SAS and Norwegian Air Shuttle anchor domestic trunk service to Oslo, Bergen, and Trondheim; Widerøe operates its characteristically dense Dash 8 regional network linking TOS to small communities throughout Finnmark, Troms, and the Svalbard stepping-stone at Longyearbyen. International service has grown rapidly with winter seasonal flights from London (Norwegian and Jet2), Amsterdam (KLM), Frankfurt (Lufthansa), Paris (Air France), Zurich (Edelweiss), Stockholm (SAS), Helsinki (Finnair), and intermittent Eastern European winter charter operations. Tromsø is also a strategic military aviation point — the Royal Norwegian Air Force's Bodø base lies to the south, and NATO exercises regularly use TOS facilities. The airport is a critical logistics hub for the Norwegian research vessel Kronprins Haakon, the Norwegian Polar Institute, and UiT – The Arctic University of Norway, which together make Tromsø the administrative capital of Norwegian Arctic science. A major runway extension and terminal expansion is under phased delivery. Passenger traffic reached approximately 2.3M in 2023, a record driven largely by aurora tourism, which has quadrupled since 2015.
