Hangzhou Xiaoshan International serves the capital of Zhejiang province and the commercial heart of the Yangtze River Delta, handling 131 direct destinations across 57 airlines and ranking among mainland China's top-ten busiest airports by passenger volume. The airport's scale reflects Hangzhou's dual identity — home to Alibaba's global headquarters and a long-established tourist draw around West Lake — and its strategic position roughly 180 km southwest of Shanghai makes it a deliberate overflow valve for the saturated PVG/SHA system. HGH is a primary base for Loong Air and a major focus city for Air China, China Eastern, and Xiamen Airlines. Cargo weight is substantial: the airport is one of China's top freight gateways, driven by Zhejiang's export manufacturing base and Cainiao's smart-logistics operations. Two parallel runways — 11,811 ft (3,600 m) and 11,155 ft (3,400 m) — handle dual-stream operations, and a third runway with accompanying T4 terminal opened in 2022, lifting design capacity toward 90M annual passengers. The airport sits at 23 ft (7 m) elevation on the south bank of the Qiantang River and connects to downtown Hangzhou via Metro Line 19, an airport express route added during the 2023 Asian Games expansion. International reach skews regional — dense service to Seoul, Tokyo, Taipei, Hong Kong, and Southeast Asian capitals — with limited long-haul coverage reflecting Hangzhou's role as a secondary gateway behind Shanghai's PVG. Nonetheless HGH's combination of runway capacity, rail connectivity, and adjacent free-trade-zone logistics have positioned it as one of the fastest-growing airports in the delta region.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Hangzhou

Public transportation

Hangzhou Metro Line 19 (Airport Express) and Lines 1 and 7 all stop beneath the terminal complex, reaching Hangzhou East Railway Station in roughly 27 minutes for 20 CNY, running 06:00–22:30 at 6–10 minute headways. A comprehensive airport shuttle bus network covers downtown Hangzhou and neighboring cities including Shaoxing, Ningbo, Yiwu, and Suzhou, with departures from the GTC on the terminal's ground floor.

Taxis & rideshare

Official metered taxis queue at marked stands outside the arrivals halls of both terminals. Downtown Hangzhou runs 120–160 CNY in 40–60 minutes, with a 10 CNY expressway toll added. Destinations written in Chinese characters are strongly advised, and licensed cabs are identified by roof-top signage and printed receipts. Didi Chuxing ride-hailing operates from designated pickup bays.

Rental cars

Counters for China Auto Rental (CAR), eHi, and Avis sit in the arrivals hall of T3. Self-drive rentals require a Chinese driver's license; International Driving Permits are not recognized for operation on Chinese roads. Chauffeur-driven services (with provided driver) are the standard alternative for foreign visitors and can be booked through the same counters or via app.
