Macau International Airport is the sole commercial airport of the Macau Special Administrative Region and one of the youngest international airports in Asia, having opened in 1995 on a purpose-built artificial island off the eastern coast of Taipa. Located 4 mi (7 km) from downtown Macau at 20 ft (6 m) elevation, MFM serves the SAR's roughly 680,000 residents plus the vastly larger visitor population drawn by Macau's concentration of casinos and the Cotai integrated-resort district, which collectively receive more than 30M visitors in peak years. The airport handles 91 routes across 56 destinations through 32 airlines. Macau's gambling revenues historically exceeded Las Vegas by several multiples, making MFM a critical access point for one of the world's largest tourism economies. Air Macau, the SAR's flag carrier, operates MFM as its sole hub with a fleet focused on Greater China, Southeast Asia, and Japan. Mainland Chinese carriers including China Southern, China Eastern, Xiamen Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, Hainan Airlines, Spring Airlines, Juneyao, and Shanghai Airlines provide the backbone of cross-border service given the SAR's special customs and immigration status vis-à-vis mainland China. Foreign carriers include Cathay Pacific, EVA Air, China Airlines, Starlux, Korean Air, Asiana, Thai AirAsia, Bangkok Airways, Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines, AirAsia Philippines, Scoot, AirAsia, Singapore Airlines subsidiaries, VietJet, and Malaysia Airlines. MFM serves as a principal alternative airport for Hong Kong travelers, especially since the 2018 opening of the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge dramatically reduced inter-region ground transfer times. The airfield operates a single artificial-island runway — 16/34 at 10,544 ft (3,214 m) in concrete, located on an offshore strip connected to the passenger terminal by twin taxiway bridges. This dual-platform marine configuration is among the most distinctive runway layouts in commercial aviation. The passenger terminal underwent major expansion in 2019 with the South Expansion adding concourse capacity and widebody contact stands. CAM — Companhia de Aeroportos de Macau — operates the facility under concession. MFM's growth has been closely tied to the Cotai Strip's casino-integrated-resort development, and the airport's operational tempo fluctuates dramatically with mainland Chinese tourism policy and the timing of major Macau convention and entertainment events.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Nossa Senhora do Carmo

Public transportation

MFM offers multiple public-transit options. Most major hotels and integrated resorts — including the Venetian, Wynn Palace, MGM Cotai, Galaxy, Parisian, and Grand Lisboa — operate complimentary shuttle buses departing from the north side of the terminal parking lot, typically running every 15–30 min during daytime hours and covering Macau Peninsula, Taipa, and Cotai destinations. Public bus routes AP1, AP1X, MT4, and 26 connect the airport to the broader Macau bus network with fares of MOP 6 paid in exact cash or with a Macau Pass. The Macau LRT Taipa Line stops at the dedicated Airport Station, providing direct rail connection to Cotai resorts and the Taipa Ferry Terminal.

Taxis & rideshare

Taxis are available 24/7 at the designated stand outside the arrivals hall. All Macau taxis are metered and regulated by the Transport Bureau, with fares calculated in Macau Pataca (MOP) though Hong Kong Dollars are widely accepted at approximate parity. Typical fares run MOP 40–60 to Taipa and Cotai destinations (10–15 min), MOP 60–90 to Macau Peninsula (20–30 min), and MOP 100–150 to the Portuguese colonial Historic Centre. Airport pickup carries a small surcharge, and additional fees apply for luggage in the trunk and for travel across the SAR's bridges.

Rental cars

Car rental counters (Avis is the principal on-site operator) are located in the arrivals hall. Renters typically need a valid passport, International Driving Permit, and credit card; certain license holders from nearby jurisdictions may be accepted without IDP. Given Macau's compact geography (just 28 sq mi / 33 sq km total land area), excellent public transit, dense casino shuttle network, and challenging urban driving with extremely limited parking, renting a car is an uncommon choice for short-stay visitors. Longer-stay business travelers making day trips to Zhuhai or Hong Kong across the HZM Bridge represent the core rental-car customer base.
