Fuzhou Changle International is the principal airport for Fujian's provincial capital and one of the busier secondary-tier gateways on China's southeastern seaboard. Located on a reclaimed coastal site in Changle District, 31 mi (50 km) southeast of downtown Fuzhou at just 46 ft (14 m) elevation on the Taiwan Strait, it handles 173 routes across 91 destinations with 36 airlines — a scale that places it firmly in the upper ranks of mainland Chinese airports despite sitting in the commercial shadow of larger regional hubs at Xiamen (XMN) and Shenzhen (SZX). Xiamen Airlines operates FOC as a secondary base, and China Eastern, China Southern, Air China, Hainan, Shenzhen Airlines, Juneyao, and Spring Airlines maintain significant domestic presences. International service is concentrated on East and Southeast Asia — Tokyo–Narita, Seoul–Incheon, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Taipei, Hong Kong, Macau, and seasonal routes to Osaka, Nagoya, and Manila — reflecting the overseas Fujianese diaspora's densest destinations, particularly in Southeast Asia. The airport's strategic geography is cross-strait: Fuzhou sits directly opposite Taipei across the Taiwan Strait, a 150 mi (240 km) span, making FOC one of mainland China's most important airports for cross-strait charters and cargo flows. Domestic service covers all major Chinese cities with dense frequency to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Chengdu. The single 11,841 ft (3,609 m) concrete runway (03/21) handles widebody operations including 787 and A330 flights, and supports scheduled widebody service on the high-density trunk routes to Beijing and Shanghai. A second parallel runway and an expanded Terminal 2 are under construction to support projected passenger growth toward 50M annually. The coastal site makes FOC a Category II ILS-equipped airport to cope with seasonal typhoon-related visibility reductions. Its route network has roughly tripled since 2010, mirroring Fuzhou's emergence as a manufacturing, digital-economy, and cross-strait trade node within the Greater Bay Area's northern rim.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Fuzhou (Changle)

Public transportation

Fuzhou Metro Line 6 terminates at Airport Station (机场站) in the ground transportation center beneath the terminal, reaching downtown Fuzhou Railway Station in approximately 45 minutes for CNY 8–10. Trains run every 8–12 minutes from 06:30 to 22:30. Airport shuttle buses depart from a dedicated counter in the arrivals hall with routes to Fuzhou Railway Station, South Railway Station, and neighboring cities including Putian, Ningde, and Quanzhou; fares range CNY 25–80.

Taxis & rideshare

Metered taxis queue at the official stand outside the arrivals hall. A trip to downtown Fuzhou takes 45–60 minutes and costs CNY 150–200 including expressway tolls; a 50% surcharge applies between 23:00 and 05:00. Ride-hailing via Didi Chuxing is widely used, with a designated app-based pickup zone on the ground floor. Drivers rarely speak English, so having the destination written in Chinese characters is advised.

Rental cars

China Auto Rental (CAR Inc.), eHi Car Services, and Shenzhou Zuche operate counters in the arrivals hall; a limited Avis presence is also available. Foreign visitors must hold a valid Chinese driver's license — an International Driving Permit is not recognized in mainland China. Most international travelers instead book a chauffeur-driven vehicle (带司机), available through the same providers with English-language booking portals.
