Harbin Taiping International Airport is the largest airport in northeastern China's Heilongjiang Province and the principal aviation gateway for the Sino-Russian frontier region, serving 45 airlines on 235 routes to 93 nonstop destinations. Located 33 km (21 mi) southwest of Harbin city center at an elevation of 457 ft (139 m), HRB is one of China's most strategically positioned hubs for cross-border traffic into the Russian Far East, with regular service to Vladivostok, Khabarovsk, Yekaterinburg, and Novosibirsk — a route network few Chinese mainland airports replicate. The airport serves as a secondary hub for China Southern Airlines and hosts a significant base for regional carriers including Beijing Capital Airlines and Loong Air. Harbin's winter conditions are among the most extreme of any major Chinese airport: the city routinely sees January temperatures of -25 C (-13 F) and the surrounding plain is snow-covered for nearly five months of the year, driving continuous investment in de-icing capacity, engineered runway grip surfaces, and specialized cold-weather ground handling equipment. During the annual Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival, HRB handles a winter tourism surge that places it briefly among China's fastest-growing airports by seasonal throughput. Taiping operates two parallel asphalt and concrete runways — 05R/23L at 11,811 ft (3,600 m) and 05L/23R at 10,499 ft (3,200 m) — alongside Terminal 1 and the newer Terminal 2, which expanded the airport's annual capacity to over 40 million passengers. A third terminal project (T3) has been publicly planned to anchor HRB as a northeastern gateway complementing Shenyang Taoxian and Dalian Zhoushuizi, with eventual phased capacity of 83 million passengers and an expanded four-runway configuration.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Harbin

Public transportation

Airport Shuttle Buses are the primary public transit link, with Line 1 running to the downtown China Southern Airlines Office near Harbin Railway Station (40–60 minutes, CNY 20), Line 2 to Harbin West Railway Station (high-speed rail interchange, 50 minutes, CNY 30), and Line 3 to Central Avenue (Zhongyang Dajie) in the tourist district. Buses depart every 30 minutes from roughly 06:00 until the last arriving flight. No metro line currently reaches the airport, though a rail connection to the Harbin Metro is under planning.

Taxis & rideshare

Metered taxis are available 24/7 at the designated stand outside the arrivals hall. A trip to downtown Harbin takes 40–60 minutes depending on weather and typically costs CNY 100–130, with a CNY 20–30 expressway toll added. Insist on the meter (da biao) and have the destination address written in Chinese, as English proficiency among drivers is limited. Ride-hailing via Didi Chuxing is widely used from designated pickup zones.

Rental cars

Car rental counters for China Auto Rental (Shenzhou Zuche) and eHi Car Services are located in the arrivals hall, with vehicles collected from a nearby depot. A valid People's Republic of China driver's license is mandatory; International Driving Permits are not recognized in mainland China, so foreign visitors must obtain a temporary Chinese license before arrival or rely on chauffeured car services. Access to the city is via the G1011 Hada Expressway.
