Tianjin Binhai International is the principal airport for the port city of Tianjin (population 13.9M) and the secondary aviation gateway for the Beijing metropolitan region, handling roughly 17M passengers annually across 197 weekly routes to 91 destinations on 37 airlines. TSN sits 13 km (8 mi) east of downtown Tianjin and 120 km (75 mi) southeast of central Beijing, and has been strategically positioned since 2014 as a relief valve for Beijing Capital's congestion — the high-speed rail connection between the two cities allows Beijing-bound passengers to reach downtown Beijing from TSN in roughly the same total time as from Beijing Capital. The airport is the main Chinese base of Tianjin Airlines (a HNA Group carrier), a significant operating base for Okay Airways, and a major cargo hub — TSN's freight operation is one of the top ten in mainland China, serving the massive port-adjacent manufacturing cluster of the Binhai New Area. Two parallel runways (11,811 ft / 3,600 m and 10,499 ft / 3,200 m) support independent operations. Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 together handle roughly 20M annual capacity, with a major third-phase expansion including Terminal 3 (55M capacity) under construction and scheduled for opening in 2028. TSN sits at 10 ft (3 m) elevation, one of the lowest major airports in northern China, with no high-altitude performance constraints. International reach is tilted toward Northeast Asia and regional short-haul — Seoul, Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, and Taipei operate as regular markets. A distinctive feature is the direct Metro Line 2 connection to the terminal, which combined with the high-speed rail link to Beijing South makes TSN unusually well-integrated into the Jing-Jin-Ji megaregion's transit system despite its secondary-hub status.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Tianjin

Public transportation

Tianjin Metro Line 2 has a station directly connected to Terminal 2, providing a fast and economical link to Tianjin Railway Station and downtown commercial districts in 20–30 minutes. Airport shuttle bus routes serve key locations across Tianjin, plus intercity routes to Beijing, Tanggu, and nearby cities. High-speed trains from Tianjin Station reach Beijing South in 30 minutes, making the combined metro-plus-HSR transfer a competitive option for Beijing-bound travelers.

Taxis & rideshare

Metered taxis queue at designated stands outside the arrivals hall around the clock. A ride to downtown Tianjin typically takes 30–50 minutes and costs CNY 60–100 depending on traffic. DiDi Chuxing ride-hailing operates from separate pickup zones and is widely used. It is advisable to have your destination address written in Chinese characters to show drivers unfamiliar with pinyin.

Rental cars

Counters for China Auto Rental (CAR Inc.), eHi Car Services, and Hertz are in the arrivals hall. Foreign visitors generally need a temporary Chinese driver's license, as the International Driving Permit is not recognized under Chinese law. Chauffeur-driven rentals are offered as the practical alternative for overseas travelers and can be arranged at the same counters or pre-booked via Chinese travel platforms.
